Board of Directors

Dr. Edward Odundo

Board Chairman

Dr. Edward Odundo is the Director, School of Pension and Retirement Studies (SPRS), Chairman of the Public Service Superannuation Scheme, Kenya (PSSS), a lecturer at the University of Nairobi, School of Business, Board Member of Equity Group Holding Plc and a Consultant in Pensions, Tax, Corporate Governance and Financial Services. He is the former Chief Executive Officer of Retirement Benefits Authority (Kenya), honored by former President, His Excellency, Hon. Mwai Kibaki, with The Moran of the Order of The Burning Spear (MBS), Former Director of the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE), Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) and Policy Holders Compensation Fund (PHCF).

He is currently a Board member of the Insurance Training and Educational Trust (ITET), Trustee of Association for The Physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK), Advisory board member of Africa Investor and the former President of the International Organization of Pensions Supervisors (IOPS). He has also published a book “The Doctrine of Strategic Planning.

Dr. Odundo has held various high-level responsibilities such as the Commissioner of Value Added Tax, Kenya Revenue Authority.

Dr. Maxwel Okoth

Founder & Group Managing Director

Dr. Maxwel Okoth is the Founder and CEO of Ruai Family Hospital and RFH Healthcare Ltd. He started Ruai Family hospital at the age of 26 years just after finishing his medical school with a seed capital of 3000 USD. He has overseen the growth and expansion of the business to 5 hospitals (50 bed hospital in Ruai, a 10-bed maternity Hospital in Tala, a 24 hour outpatient facility in Embakasi, an outpatient facility in Jacaranda Gardens and a 100 bed multi-specialty hospital in Ruai. The chain currently attends to about 500 patients a day and has plans of expanding across the country and the East African Region.

Prior to being the CEO of RFH Healthcare, he served in various roles in the public health sector, his last role being the Deputy Director of Health Services and Medical Superintendent of Mutuini Hospital in Nairobi County where he was mandated to spearhead the upgrade of Mutuini Dispensary which was a Constituency Development Fund Built hospital operating as a dispensary to a level four hospital since it had been devolved into a county hospital. He oversaw the opening of the maternity wing, imaging department and the inpatient wards, the hospital started operating 24hours, and is currently operating as a full-fledged hospital

He is a graduate of Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) from the University of Nairobi, Certified Public accounts from Strathmore College of Accountancy, Managing Healthcare Business from Strathmore University, Stanford Seed Transformation Program from Stanford Graduate School of Business and Senior Executive Program form Harvard Business School. He is currently undertaking the Global CEO Program from the prestigious IESE School of Business. He was awarded with the Year 2019 254 Top Male Entrepreneur Under 35 award. And 2019 Top 40 under 40 business award.

Mr. Nicholas Kaweru

CEO, RFH Group

Mr. Kaweru is the Acting CEO and Director Human Resource at RFH Healthcare. He is an experienced Human Resource Professional with 20 years’ experience in the management field. He served in various roles under Human Resource Management such as Head of Organization Development in Chase Bank, Head of Talent and Organization Development at Rafiki Microfinance Bank from 2015 to 2021 and several.

He joined RFH Healthcare in 2022 as the Director Human Resource and brings to the Board an extensive understanding of leadership, people management, talent acquisition and organizational development.

He is a graduate of the University of Nairobi with a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and Sociology and is a seasoned financial analyst.

Maria Kagai Ligaga Shipiri

Director

Maria Kagai Ligaga Shipiri is a global Human Resources with over to 20 years of experience across telecommunications, banking, pharmaceuticals, FMCGs and the development sectors.

She has held senior roles in global organizations, currently as Consultant Organization Design & Change at the Mastercard Foundation. Other recent assignments include the Chief People & Culture Officer at Living Goods and Head of Organizational Effectiveness for the African Development Bank in Cote d’Ivoire. Her experience in telecommunications includes Director, HR for Vodafone’s entity in Kenya (Safaricom) and Head of HR for Vodafone Group’s Enterprise function in the UK.

She serves as Non-Executive Director on the boards of UAP/Old Mutual, Octagon Financial Services and Living Goods. Married to Alex Shipiri, they are parents to Wendy Emali.

Prof. Walter Jaoko

Director

Walter Jaoko is a medical doctor, a professor of medical microbiology and tropical medicine, and the Director of KAVI-Institute of Clinical Research, University of Nairobi. He is also an Extraordinary Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine at Stellenbosch University, and an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the School of Public Health, University of Alabama at Birmingham. He trained at the University of Nairobi, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, and Stellenbosch University. He has many years of experience at managerial positions and is a member of the Board of Directors in several local and international not-for-profit organizations.

Duncan Gateru

Director Audit

Duncan Gateru holds a Master of Arts degree in Economics from Moi University, a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Statistics from Maseno University is a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya (CPA K), and a trained Domestic Taxes expert with over ten years of experience in taxation.

He’s brought his experience to the hospital as Director Internal Audit and Tax and has been instrumental in making strategic decisions of the hospital in line with its long-term goals.

He brings to the team expertise in Business Management, Finance, Internal Audit, Risk Management, and leadership.

Daniel Cremer

Director Finance

Daniel is the Regional Head of Origination for East Africa at AfricInvest Private Credit, the debt vehicle of the AfricInvest Group and acts as observer on various boards across different countries. He has a vast experience in the Private Credit and Investment Banking industry. Prior to joining AfricInvest Private Credit, he has worked in the Leveraged Finance division of the Dutch banking group ING and previously worked for the German banking group Commerzbank. He holds a Diploma in Economics and a Bachelor in Mathematics from the Johannes Gutenberg – University Mainz, Germany. He brings to the Board a wealth of experience in financial planning and management, operations optimizations and strategy implementation all of which are key aspects in the long-term growth of RFH.

Harold Zagunis

Director

Harold Zagunis is an accomplished business executive whose 40+ year career includes extensive experience in all aspects of growing dynamic, small- to mid-size businesses, including taking several companies public.
Zagunis has served as chief financial officer for public companies Redwood Trust (a real-estate investment trust), TPVG (a business development company providing venture lending to private companies), and other privately held companies. He has also had various senior executive roles in companies in diverse sectors including real estate development, commercial and residential lending, banking, and venture lending.
Zagunis holds a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics and economics from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, and a Master’s degree in business administration from Stanford Graduate School of Business. He joins the board as a Board Observer bringing with him vast knowledge on financial operations of organizations.

Asma Berrima
Asma Berrima

Director

Asma is the Senior Relationship Manager at AfricInvest Private Credit from August 2015. Before joining APC, Asma was a former consultant with Ernest & Young in their Tunis office within their Transaction Advisory department where she conducted various aspects of Due Diligence and other analytical exercises.

Asma holds a Master’s Degree in Banking and Finance from Université Paris Dauphine and a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance from IHEC Carthage IN Tunisia. She brings to the board over 7 years of experience in finance as an able Board Observer.

Grace Wanjiru

Director

Grace Wanjiru is the current director of Strathmore university medical center. She holds a masters in health care management from the Strathmore Business school, Degree in Medical laboratory sciences and a higher national Diploma in blood transfusion Sciences.
She has over 10 years’ experience in the clinical practices and health care management.
She has pioneered Quality Management system in several hospitals and led them towards achieving and sustaining hospital accreditation process (safe care and Kenya quality model for health) and ISO 9001 :2015 accreditation.
She is a certified QMS lead auditor by the kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) She is a member of various Hospital boards where she sits and chairs in the quality Assurance Committees. She is passionate about patient safety, quality of care and its impact on patients’ outcomes and return on investment.
Other than professional work she is involved in the community by serving the needy under sustainable development goal 2 (Zero Hunger)
